Sponge
Originally used to hold a sponge during skin preparation or hemostatic exposure these instruments over time have many expanded uses. Sponge forceps are common in OBGYN, lung, tonsil, colon, and other surgical procedures.
The smaller Ballenger models measure 7" in length while the Foersters and Bauer models measure 9-1/2". Each come with both smooth and serrated jaws. The Bauer models also feature elongated tips for delicate procedures.
Heavily used in gynecological applications they are able to atraumatically grasp and hold the bladder or cervix during examination or manipulate tissue during procedures. Listed below are some addition common applications:
